Kurryz compares well with
the rest
CHOOSING a restaurant in Peterborough for fine
Indian cuisine is like being a kid in a sweet
shop – there’s just too much choice. average and excellent venues to
sample a decent curry, both bang in the centre
or on the outskirts. With that in mind, myself
and three friends headed to the city’s newest
Indian restaurant, Kurryz, to see if it could
compete. Based in HamptonVale, Kurryz is in
direct competition with the impressive
Maharanis, in Hargate Way, Hampton Hargate,
which is just a stone’s throw away. The first thing that hits when you
arrive at Kurryz (which only opened a few months
ago) is the attention the owners have taken to
create an attractive restaurant, with just the
right amount of seating. Although a quiet Monday night, you
get the impression even on a packed Friday, you
won’t be pushing elbows with guests at tables
next to you.
Another first-impression killer can be the
tardiness of staff, but, again, Kurryz suffers
none of this and we were seated with a smile –
always a good start.
The menu is vast, but for Ben and I, it wasn’t
difficult to choose our starters of paneer
shashlic and the mix kebab. Both of which were
brought out on a sizzling plate and individually
served to us. And
a good start to the night’s meal was enjoyed,
with Ben saying his shashlic was “really good”,
while my kebab was perfectly tender and
succulent. Down to the main business of the
night, the curries, and the four of us took our
time selecting a dish each.
I was mightily impressed with my chicken rogan,
complete with well cooked meat, rich sauce and
it was a large portion. Dipping into the Kurryz
special section, Ben opted for the diana special
chicken, while James chose the shahi jalfrize –
choices that neither regretted. Ben said: “There
were huge bits of chicken and it was really
good,” while James added: “It had a good spice,
hot but not too hot. It was a good curry.”
